We actually wish Kvernufoss was more hidden than it is. It’s only a few minutes drive from the famous and crowded Skogafoss, and the “hike” to it is more of a stroll. It was one of our favorite waterfalls in Iceland!

Hiking to Kvernufoss, a Not-So-Hidden Gem

If you’re tired of the crowds at Skogafoss (though you can avoid some of them by hiking above the waterfall), we highly recommend you head over to Kvernufoss. It’s just a few minutes drive away and a super easy hike.

We parked next to some old warehouse buildings by the Skogar Museum. From here, we walked northeast until we reached a ladder to get over the fence. The river was just ahead and we followed it up and into the narrow canyon hiding Kvernufoss.

It was only a few minutes until we laid eyes on this beautiful waterfall!

We passed one group on the way out, but when we reached the foot of the falls, we were the only ones in the canyon the entire time were enjoying it. This was surprising since it is so close to Skogafoss and we saw no shortage of posts about this waterfall on the internet. Not that we were complaining, though!

There is actually a small cove where you can walk behind the falls. We decided not to this time as we were about to dinner and had only just dried off from being soaked by the last three waterfalls we visited!
