We don’t have many regrets on our Iceland trip, but not hiking farther on “Waterfall Way” may be one of them. We’ve now put this hike on our bucket list and will be back some day to do it, but for now, we got just a little taste of the beautiful Skogar River above the famous Skogafoss.

A Taste of Waterfall Way Above Skogafoss

“Waterfall Way” is the first portion of an epic 16-mile one-way hike called Fimmvörðuháls from Skógar to Þórsmörk. In this section, there are a whopping 26 waterfalls in the Skogar River! We would have LOVED to have done this hike, but at about 10 miles round trip until the last waterfall, it would have taken up most of one day and we already had a very ambitious itinerary. Needless to say it’s high on our to-do list for next trip to Iceland.

To satiate us and escape the crowds at Skogafoss, we couldn’t resist huffing and puffing it up the 200-foot stairs to the top of the falls to hike down the river at least a little way. Apparently I was too distracted to take any photos of this part, so here’s a photo of me trying to go for the treasure behind the falls:

While we can’t say it was a ghost town above the falls, there are significantly less people. As usual, the farther you walk, the less people you’ll see.

I think we may have made it to waterfall #5 before we turned around so we could hit up Kvernufoss.

“Waterfall Way” has definitely made it on to our bucket list and we can’t wait to cross it off!
